It is an endless debate and confusion when it is about prawns and shrimps. People argued that they are the same, the spelling and name are different due to the difference in British and American english. Sadly, they are wrong! The only similarity that prawns and shrimps share are the number of their legs, since both of them are classified as decapod crustaceans. That’s it for their similarities. Now we are going to venture upon the difference between prawns and shrimps.
Difference between Prawns and Shrimps
1. They are both under the a different sub-order
As mentioned earlier, both prawns and shrimps are classified as decapod crustaceans, which bring the meaning of they are creatures who have an exoskeleton and have ten legs. But do you know that their sub-order is different from each other? Prawns are classified under the Dendrobranchiata sub-order, while shrimps are classified under the Pleocymata sub-order.
2. They are anatomically different
At first glance, prawns and shrimps might look a little bit familiar with each other. But a proper and throughout look will prove to you that they are different. First, their gills are different in type. Prawns’ gills are caled branching, while shrimps’ gills are called plate-like (lamellar). Second, prawns are also known to have a straighter “body” than shrimp. This is because prawn cannot bend since its outer skeleton doesnt let it to. Shrimp, on the hand, are always in a curl like shape.
Third, they also have differences with their legs. Prawn’s largest pincers are at their second pair of legs, while it is at the front for shrimp.Three pairs of prawn’s legs have claws while it is only two pairs for shrimp. They are also different in the way they fertilized. In order to grow, fertilized eggs of the prawns are released into the water. Meanwhile, the fertilized eggs of the shrimps are carried on the underside of their body.
3. Their size is different
Prawns are bigger than shrimp! Hence, making them different from each other.
4. They live in different types of water
In terms of farming and aquaculture, Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United States (FAO) stated that shrimp is classified as marine creatures since they live in salt water while freshwater is prawns only habitat. The white leg shrimp and giant tiger prawn are two most common farm varieties of shrimps and prawns that the classification focusly applied on.
5. They are not equal in popularity
In pop culture, shrimp are more popular than prawns. Paul Hogan, an Australian comedian, filmed a promotional advertisement for Australian tourism in 1984. He uttered a popular line at the end of the advertisement, “I’ll slip a shrimp on the barbie for ya”. Because it is a tourism advertisement, he changed the prawn in the line to a shrimp because the targeted audience was American. Because of that, this line has become a famous greeting received by Australian from Americans. In Forrest Gump, 1994, Forrest uttered a line where he mentioned that he learned a lot of ways to cook shrimps from “Bubba Blue”, his friend.
